How to Decide Between a Gas and Electric Stove for Your Home

When you purchase a used home, you are typically stuck with the gas or electric stove connection that the home has. You can also hire a plumber or electrician to change the stove connection in your home. Changing the connection can get expensive depending on how complex it is to get the gas line or wiring to your kitchen. But, when you build a new home, you can choose your stove connection.

There are a number of factors to consider when making the gas vs electric stove decision.  In general, gas stovetop burners allow for more precise heat control. They heat the pan faster and when you adjust the flame up or down the temperature in the pan changes faster. This is why you almost always see gas cooktops in restaurant kitchens.  However, electric stoves with smoothtop burners are much easier to clean. The surface is a flat, smooth glass top so there aren’t any burners to remove or clean around.  The oven part of the stove is a different story.  The electric oven typically provides for more even heat which leads to more consistent cooking, especially of baked goods.

So what is a homeowner to do? You can actually have the best of both worlds by purchasing a duel-fuel stove. A dual-fuel stove has gas stovetop burners and an electric oven in the same unit. You need to let your builder know that you need both a gas and electric stove connection installed. The additional connection costs a few hundred dollars more but the chef in your family will greatly appreciate the benefits of the duel fuel stove.
